How Much a Sign Shop Actually Makes on a 4×8 Banner

A 4×8 banner is 32 square feet of 13oz scrim vinyl, and the shop that sells it keeps somewhere between $50 and $150 of the price. Which end of that range you land on has almost nothing to do with the vinyl and almost everything to do with how you quote the art, the hardware, and the hour you spend on the phone.

This is the first post in a series where we put our wholesale price next to real retail prices and do the arithmetic in the open. Shops ask us this in private all the time. There is no reason it should be private. If you know the margin, you quote with confidence, and a shop that quotes with confidence sells more banners from us.

/What we charge you

Our 13oz banner is hemmed, grommets every 2 to 3 feet, printed at full color. The price below comes straight off the calculator on our site today, one design, no rush.

Size Qty 1 Qty 10, each Per sq ft at qty 10
3×6 $24.78 $22.50 $1.25
3×8 $32.11 $30.00 $1.25
4×6 $32.11 $30.00 $1.25
4×8 $41.89 $40.00 $1.25

Add freight, which is simpler than most shops expect. Any order of $50 or more ships UPS for a flat $10, as long as rolled goods are 48 inches or under and rigid pieces are 24×24 or smaller. Bigger than that goes through the shipping estimator linked on our homepage before you order, so there is no surprise on the invoice. A single 4×8 at $41.89 is under $50 on its own, so add anything else to the cart to clear $50 and the flat $10 applies. That is the case we price below: call your landed cost on one 4×8 about $52. On ten of them the $10 spreads across the order, so call it $41 each.

/What the street charges

We looked at what shops and online printers actually list for the same banner. Blue Wave Printing lists a 4×8 13oz with hems and grommets at $71.52. Bigger Better Banner lists $62.57 with an upgrade tier at $89.38. Printastic starts at $90 and climbs past $160 with finishing. Those are the discount online numbers, and they are the floor of the market, not the middle.

Brick and mortar sign shops charge more, and they should. In the long running Signs101 banner pricing thread, working shop owners quote $3 to $8 per square foot retail, with several landing at $5 to $6.50. At $4 per square foot a 4×8 is $128. At $6 it is $192. Mosh in that thread said it plainly: he targets about $125 for a 4×8. That was years ago and prices have not gone down.

/The margin, in dollars

Take a landed cost of $52 for one banner and $41 each for ten.

You sell at Gross on one Gross on ten Margin
$95 (online price match) $43 $540 45% / 57%
$128 ($4 per sq ft) $76 $870 59% / 68%
$160 ($5 per sq ft) $108 $1,190 68% / 74%
$192 ($6 per sq ft) $140 $1,510 73% / 79%

Read the bottom row again. A local shop selling ten 4x8s to one customer at $6 a square foot clears over $1,500 on a job it never touched a printer for. That is the whole wholesale model in one line.

/Matching the internet price is a losing game

Some shops see the $62 online listing and quote $75 to feel safe. Do not. The customer who found that $62 price and still walked into your shop did it because they do not want to upload a file to a website, they want to hand you a photo of their old banner and get a new one. That is a service, and service is priced above commodity. Quote $128 to $160 and say it without apologizing. If you lose the job to a website, you lost a customer who was going to send you a 72dpi JPEG and argue about the color anyway.

Where the online number does matter is repeat commercial work. A landscaper who buys six banners a season knows what banners cost. Give that customer $4 a square foot and keep them for ten years.

/The three things that eat the margin

Art time is the big one. Rebuilding a logo from a business card scan takes 30 to 60 minutes. If you do not charge for it, you just gave away $50 to $75 and turned a $70 gross into a $10 gross. Charge $65 per hour, one hour minimum, and say it is standard. It is.

Hardware and install hide in the quote. Bungees, zip ties, a pole pocket instead of grommets, or driving out to hang it on a fence. Line item every one of them. A pole pocket costs you a few dollars from us and should be $15 to $25 to the customer. An install visit is never free.

The phone is the one nobody counts. Three calls about whether the red will match, two emails about the file, one visit to approve a proof. If a banner takes two hours of your attention, you did not make $70, you made $35 an hour. Set the proof process up front, one proof, one revision, and hold to it.

/Where the extra margin lives

The 4×8 is the anchor, not the profit. The profit is the second banner. Once the art is built the next one costs you $41 and ten minutes, so offer it: one for the storefront, one for the event, one for the truck. Two banners at $128 each is $256 in revenue on about $84 of cost, and the art time is already paid for.

Upsells that cost you almost nothing from us: 18oz for a banner that lives outdoors all year, double sided for a fence line that gets traffic both ways, mesh for anything on a chain link fence in wind. Each one is $20 to $40 more from us and $60 to $100 more to the customer.

/The short version

Your landed cost on a 4×8 from us is about $52 for one and $41 each for ten. The market retail range is $95 on the low end from online printers to $190 from shops that price by the square foot. Quote $4 to $6 per square foot, charge for art, line item the hardware, and sell the second banner. Done that way a 4×8 is worth $75 to $140 to you, and a ten piece order is worth over $1,000.
